Success for Writtle University College’s celebration of horticulture

On Sunday 12th June, Writtle University College in Essex welcomed hundreds of people to its campus for a successful one-day event.   

The Celebration of Horticulture brought together industry members, academics, and members of the public for a family-friendly day of talks, demonstrations, and activities.

Plant and craft stalls were placed next to an open-air stage that hosted gardening experts.


The RHS’ Matt Oliver discussed Hyde Hall’s Global Growth Vegetable Garden, and Italian Chef Claudio Bincoletto talked about flavorsome food. 

Students enjoyed showcasing their knowledge on popular topics, from creating pots for shady spots to hanging baskets.

Tackling gardening dilemmas was high on the agenda. A panel of experts, including RHS staff, lecturers, and Steven Coghill, the horticulturalists behind Kings’ College in Cambridge’s headline-grabbing grounds, answered the public’s questions on everything from identifying perennials to issues with aphids.


Food vendors, live music, and children’s activities were available throughout the event, with guided tours introducing the University College’s gardens and greenhouses.


The day also featured a talk from green-fingered couple Christine and Mick Lavelle. The pair celebrated 21 years of teaching at Writtle University College in a fully-packed lecture theatre.


“It was an outstanding day,” said Vice-Chancellor Professor Tim Middleton. “We were delighted to welcome so many people from the surrounding area, in addition to our former students and experts from the horticulture sector. Thank you to everyone who joined us.”
