The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has warned of possible power interruptions, with maximum power load interruptions in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania. Therefore, New South Wales farmers say they are doing everything possible to prepare for blackouts as power supply issues loom, but some say it may not be enough.
Anthony Sarks grows strawberries and tomatoes in greenhouses on his Port Macquarie property, where he uses electricity for almost everything from pumping water to heating. He has backup generators, but a significant power outage would be disastrous for his business. Sarks said the move to renewables was responsible for the situation.
While many farmers have transitioned to solar, Sarks said that, with little sun thanks to an above-average wet season, his solar system was not as beneficial as it could be.
